Last night my youngest child, who is 22, had a bunch of friends over, big, happy dudes

he's hung out with since 3rd grade. My son was home from college for the funeral of a dear friend. Drinking beer and kicked back on the porch, three out of five wore work boots and dirty tank tops, They were all going to the memorial service in the morning..
We all heard Hunter on his screaming orange Kawasaki as he came up the driveway. Once he took off his helmet, the guys circled up to admire his bike and hug their old friend. Since he'd joined the coast guard, we hadn't seen Hunter in a couple of years. He'd filled out and looked wonderfully healthy.
With a grin, Hunter pulled away to shake my husband's hand. We've known the boy, now a man, since he was 11.
"Mr Hampo, I have my conceled carry, do you mind if I'm carrying in the house?" , he asked, his right hand resting on the nine millimeter hanging from his belt.
Alex considered the question. "Honestly Hunter, I'd rather you'd leave it outside while we eat. Six 22 year old goobers and a gun seems like a bad idea."
Hunter nodded, "yes sir," then stashed his pistol on the bike.
We have plenty of weapons in our house. We live in Arkansas and most folks do. What struck me was Hunters decesion to ask my husband, the home owner, for permission. He didn't swagger or assume it was his "right". Legally, the law is generally on the gunowners side ALL THE TIME in Arkansas. He really didn't have to ask.
But Hunter was thoughtful, courteous and man enough to for permission.
At that moment Alex and I knew two things, Hunter was infact a man and he was old enought to carry.
