My 3 Seceret Foods in Hot Springs

Everyone has their favorite food, and that's great, but I'm sick of food that tastes like cardboard, like cheap white bread, like chemicals I've never heard of.. I'm so over seasoning like lemon, garlic and chemicals, Please, somebody give me a new flavor. Thankfully, I drive around all day for the radio stations I work for, so I've found a few seceret spots with food that feed my soul.

#1 Weldon's Meat...yup, it's a butcher shop and they have fantastic steaks, chicken and scallops. But every morning when they are smoking meats they put the tid bits, the odds and ends, the scraps, of fantastic cuts of beef on skewers and smoke those too. The end result are tender skewers of magic. The meat is crazysoft, like meat colored cookie dough, with so much flavor. Seriously. And each skewer is less than four dollars. I kind of hate telling you this because they sell out pretty quickly.

There are all kinds of reasons to love Weldons, but holy hell their little skewers are freakishly good. I'll grab one for lunch and it's more than enough. And honestly, if I go in and they are sold out. I get kind of pissed off. It's supposed to be my seceret.

Try one of these skewers and you'll thank me over and over. If you want to say thanks for real buy a skewer for me or a Be Nice! Arkansas tshirt or hat and we'll call it even.

#2 The Tres leches cakes at La Brujas Dulceria on Ouachita Avenue are insanely wonderous. I'd never tried a Tres Leches cake until I found Las Brujas. It rocked my world. I'm not a huge sweets person, but Holy Hell these little cakes changed my world.

Tres Leches cakes originated in Mexico or Nicaragua, I don't really care, I just want more. It's an incrediably spongey, light cake soaked in three different kinds of dairy, evaporated milk, condensed milk and heavy cream. And yes, I did say it was a light cake. The result is a juicy(yeah a juicy cake), moist, pudding like cake with a simple whipped cream topping. Then there's the garnish on top, fruit or drizzled chocolate, anything works. The result is freaking mind blowing. The world is better when you are eatting a Tres Leches cake. I promise. Republicans, Democrates, global warming and violence disapear. There's only the cake.

And the store, La Brujas Dulceria, is delightful too, with all kinds of freaky, weird, magical candy from all over the world. I'm always thinking "who would eat that?" Then I try a bite and wonder why I havent I been eating it all my life?.

Sometimes I'll buy three or eight of the little cakes just to deliver to friends and clients. It's the perfect way to deliver joy.

My final magnificent food in Hot Springs is my very own salsa. It's the greatest thing in the history of the human race. Some folks insist my salsa is Pico De Gallo, but you know what? I make it so I get to call it what ever I want..

I only make my salsa in the summer because that's the only time tomatoes have any flavor. Winter tomatos are pathetic.

I add chopped bell peppers to the summer tomatoes, red onions, fresh lemon juice, garlic, salt (too much salt) hot sauce or chopped jalapinos and freshly chopped cilantro. It's simple and perfect. It's important to chop all the produce in fat chunky pieces and I promise, it'll be the best salsa you've ever ever had. I'll make a batch then I can't stop dipping my chip.

Here's the good news. Maybe eatting too much of my salsa will tear up your stomach and tongue, give you ulsers and make your stomach hurt, but I swear it helps with depression. I think it helps because it gets the chemicals in your brain flowing in a different direction. First, the salsa is beautiful, with lots of brilliant colors and big chunky pieces of flavor. Next, the flavors are perfect and make your brain happy because it knows your doing soething good for your body.. When you eat this salsa you're eatting a ton of fresh vegetables, your brain and body know that stuff, the tomatoes, peppers, onions, lemon, are so so good for you.. As a result, it helps beat back depression. You're brain thinks, "maybe there is hope, maybe we will eat beautiful, perfect food instead of cheetos and Whoppers."

Here's a warning though. When you eat my salsa you'll have really bad breath. You'll never get kissed, so after you eat my salsa, make sure you brush your teeth or at least find a Tic Tac.

Food is good stuff, it can help us, make us smarter and stronger. But we have to eat the good stuff. We have to eat food that nurtures our brain and body. As a result, we'll all feel better, I promise.
